Twenty-two Indianapolis 500 veterans will drive in the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am race Saturday, June 16, the feature race of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational on June 15-17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indianapolis 500 veterans will be in 1963 to 1972 vintage Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs of SVRA “Group 6” A and B Production. The professionals will be paired with amateur drivers, splitting their stints at the wheel. Here’s a look at the Indy 500 vets competing this Saturday on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course at IMS and some of the combined numbers they produced during their Indianapolis 500 careers: Indy 500 veterans (in alphabetical order): Tom Bagley, Donnie Beechler, Geoff Brabham, Matt Brabham, Mark Dismore, Sarah Fisher, Davey Hamilton, Scott Harrington, Jimmy Kite, Bob Lazier, Jaques Lazier, Darren Manning, John Martin, Max Papis, Johnny Parsons, Willy T. Ribbs, Lyn St. James, Dick Simon, Paul Tracy, Rick Treadway, Al Unser Jr., Jimmy Vasser Indy 500 starts: 142 (Most starts in field – Al Unser Jr., 19) Indy 500 victories: 2 (Al Unser Jr., 1992, 1994) Indy 500 laps led: 170 (Most laps led in field – Al Unser Jr., 110) Indy 500 poles: 1 (Al Unser Jr., 1994) Indy 500 Rookies of the Year: 1 (Lyn St. James, 1992) Indy 500 Fastest Four-Lap Qualification Average by a Woman: 229.439 mph (Sarah Fisher, 2002) There’s also a small but successful Brickyard 400 contingent in the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am field represented by co-drivers Bill Elliott and Ray Evernham. Elliott won the 2002 Brickyard 400 with Evernham as his team owner, and Evernham also was the winning Brickyard 400 crew chief in 1994 and 1998 with driver Jeff Gordon. The Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am will benefit IGNITE – the Autism Society of North Carolina’s community center for young adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome.
