The inaugural Indy Women in Tech Championship presented by Guggenheim, to be held in early September at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will be contested over three rounds this year with a Saturday finish, the LPGA recently announced.
The $2 million tournament will be played from Sept. 7-9, giving the world's top female golfers the incentive to come to Indy and still have time to travel to France for the season’s final major, the Evian Championship on Sept. 14-17.
Alternative date options will be considered by LPGA officials and tournament organizers for future years with a time frame that suits the LPGA travel schedule and the Indianapolis sporting calendar while also allowing for four rounds of competition.
The Indy Women in Tech Championship, which will feature a full field of 144 players on a Pete Dye-designed course that weaves through the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, joins the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer and the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G as a three-day event on the LPGA Tour’s 2017 schedule.
The LPGA Tour’s 500 Ladies Classic was played at the same venue in 1968 before the course was remodeled in 1991 and given its current name.
The redesigned Brickyard Crossing Golf Course places holes 7 through 10 inside the Speedway track, which is host to the largest single-day sporting event in the world –- the Indianapolis 500.
Indianapolis has not hosted a stroke-play tournament on the LPGA Tour since the Mayflower Classic in 1988, although other events have been held in the state of Indiana -- most recently the 2005 Solheim Cup at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel.
In addition to bringing the world’s best golfers to Indianapolis, the Indy Women in Tech Championship will raise funds for the Indy Women in Tech foundation. The foundation, established by Guggenheim, was created to provide awareness and funding for impactful women and tech initiatives, particularly those focused on robotics, STEM days and career transitioning for those re-entering the workforce.
