The 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is right around the corner, so we’re showcasing race fans and their stories of “Why I Love the Infield” – fans from recent years that are 30 years of age or younger. All fans are encouraged to email fanmemories@brickyard.com with their stories of attending the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. David Land of Auburn, Indiana, will be attending his 15th consecutive Indianapolis 500 this May. Land, 22, works as an online content creator reviewing motorsports. Where we sit: North Vista, I have sat there every year. First “500”: My first race was in 2002. It was everything you could hope for – beautiful weather, big names in the field like Michael Andretti, and the cars sounded and looked great. Race Day routine: Wake up incredibly early, drive to the North 40 with my family just as the gates open, set up camp and argue about the race until it’s reasonable to head up to our seats and enjoy the opening ceremonies. In the squad: Right now – my brother, sister, my two uncles, and my cousin. It has been a rotating door of family members over the years though! What we bring: Coolers with drinks, sandwiches, snacks, and sunscreen. Also some starting grids and programs to score the race. In the Infield: I love it throughout the month during practice and qualifying. The viewing mounds are a great spot to take some beautiful photos, you can really capture the speed of the cars there. Favorite “500”: I will say this, the competition I have seen since about 2011 has been probably the best it has ever been. The Indianapolis 500 is such a relentless event to be a spectator for now, there is so much happening every lap. It’s incredible. Brush with greatness: I have met lots and lots of drivers and personalities over the years, that's one of the great things about IndyCar racing, everything is so accessible. I would have to say finally meeting my racing hero Buddy Lazier after Pole Day in 2014. It was kind of embarrassing because I turned back into that 5-year-old kid who used to scream when Buddy would win a race and was telling him this stupid stuff like he was the reason my favorite color is purple. He was so gracious though, just a cool dude. Favorite drivers from the past: Obviously Buddy Lazier even though he still shows up for the “500.” Buddy was my IRL driver, and then I rooted for Michael Andretti in CART. So it was cool to see them go head-to-head in a few of my first Indianapolis 500s. Favorite drivers today: Marco Andretti, Josef Newgarden, and Simon Pagenaud What the Indianapolis 500 means to us: To steal a quote from Steve McQueen: "It’s life, everything else is just waiting." My year starts and ends with the “500.” It’s one of the most important things in my life and really always has been. It always will be!
