Scott Dixon won the pole for the 99th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, averaging 226.760 mph for four laps in his No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

Joining Dixon on the front row is Verizon IndyCar Series defending champion Will Power (226.350) and Simon Pagenaud (226.145), both in Team Penske Chevrolets.

“I was thinking we were going to do somewhere in the low 226 (mph) range. On the first lap I got a gust of wind, I don’t know what it was, and we got a 227,” Dixon said. “A huge credit goes to the team. Team Target did a good job all month, even today with the configuration changes.”

Teams qualified with the same boost levels and aero packages they will have in the race out of concern for safety after Ed Carpenter crashed in practice on Sunday morning.

Dixon became the 19th driver to win multiple Indianapolis 500 poles. He won the race from the pole in 2008 and will look to do so again on May 24.
