FAQs
  • What is the IMS College Program?
  • The Indianapolis Motor Speedway College Program is an event execution program where students are placed on a team and will be an extension of their assigned department. Students will work in a variety of event roles designed to serve thousands of guests and enhance their experience.
  • What are the different teams I could be placed on?
  • The College Program is composed of four teams: Guest Experience & Operations, Hospitality & Premium Services, Ticketing & Credentials and Marketing & Branding
  • What is the application process?
  • All applicants will apply directly from www.ims.com/collegeprogram. Following application reviews, you will be invited to Step 2 of the process—an experience and preferences questionnaire. This is where you will detail your experiences, skills and behaviors, and you will be asked to rank your areas of interest. After the survey is reviewed by our hiring team, you will receive a phone interview (Step 3). After this step, you may be asked for a second round interview to help finalize which team you will be placed on.
  • When is the application deadline?
  • We have several application and placement phases. Teams are filled in different phases based on priorities, meaning not each team will have the same start date. To be fully considered for all College Program opportunities, applicants should work towards applying by March 1. After March 1, only the remaining spots on select teams will be available.
  • Is the College Program a paid opportunity? Can I receive school credit?
  • Yes! All College Program members will receive an hourly rate depending on area assigned. Depending on your school’s requirements, you may be able to receive college credit. You can check with your direct supervisor on approximate hours for your program experience.
  • How many hours, and what events, will I work throughout the season?
  • Hours and events will vary by team, so make sure to ask these questions during your interview. The College Program is Month of May focused, however there will be opportunities for program members to work part-time throughout the remainder of the IMS event season, which includes the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR Cup Series race July 3-5, 2020.
  • What kind of networking/professional development opportunities will be available throughout the College Program?
  • We will have a variety of networking and professional development opportunities throughout the program. You will receive a detailed outline of opportunities at the beginning of May. While attending these is not required, we highly encourage you to participate to ensure you have a well-rounded and complete College Program experience.
  • What kind of social opportunities will I experience during my time in the College Program?
  • We will offer multiple opportunities for social activities. We will have two formal social engagements during the College Program, including one service-oriented opportunity. Also, most teams organize several informal activities together on their own.
  • Will there be a training session, and how will I become an expert in my event role?
  • We will host an all-program training session on Wednesday, May 6. This will include an introduction to IMS, a facility tour, a Month of May overview and time to break out into your perspective teams.
  • How and when will I receive a schedule?
  • Each team will receive a schedule from their direct supervisor closer to the Month of May.
  • On an event day, what will I wear and where will I park?
  • This will be covered in-depth at the training session. However, for planning purposes all staff will be provided with an IMS polo, but be prepared to wear black pants. All program members will park on-site during event days and will be provided with a parking pass.
  • I live outside of the Indianapolis area or the State of Indiana. Does IMS offer discounted housing?
  • Yes! We do encourage those from outside of Indy to stay with friends, family or other participants who do live in the area. However, if you are interested, we can connect you with a local university for discounted housing.
