Hispanic Heritage Spotlight: Luisa Lopez Macer and Alicia Mendez McCarthy

Note: As part of its salute to National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, IMS.com talked with two Indianapolis Motor Speedway employees about their Hispanic roots and pride. Luisa Lopez Macer (above photo, left) is the manager of community outreach and fan engagement, while Alicia Mendez McCarthy (above photo, right) is a licensing coordinator in the Licensing and Consumer Products department.

Q: How do you celebrate Hispanic heritage?

LM: While living away from my native country, I do like to venture out and support local community groups that celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The Mexican Consul hosts an annual gathering in Garfield Park to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Makes for a great opportunity to eat some Mexican delicacies and hang out with my family. I serve on many boards around the Indianapolis community that help elevate the Hispanic businesses and resources, and when I can, I like to go patronize their locations.

Q: What are your favorite parts of Hispanic culture to share with others?

LM: Exploring culture is a great way to learn about other people while deepening respect for diversity and inclusion. This month, in particular, is a great way to “break bread” with others and serves as a time to recognize, educate and celebrate the amazing contributions Hispanics have made in this country. I take pride in sharing my journey from Mexico to America and teaching my colleagues/friends about how complex these journeys can be for some.

Q: What is your favorite Hispanic cultural dish?

LM: My favorite dish is called “Pozole.” Pozole is a traditional Mexican cuisine soup. It is made from hominy and mixed with either beef or chicken. I like to garnish it with shredded lettuce, chili peppers, onion, garlic, avocado and limes. Pozole is traditionally accompanied with a tostada that is covered in sour cream and cotija cheese. I love when we have the opportunity to make it as a family because it brings a piece of Mexico into my home.

Q: What is a family tradition that is important to you that ties back to your cultural heritage?

LM: Spending time with family. Being among family is a big aspect of my culture. While much of my family still resides in Mexico, it feels good to stay connected with them – even if it means being virtual.

Q: How do you celebrate Hispanic heritage?

AM: For me, I celebrate my heritage by honoring my family, acknowledging their sacrifices and continuing the traditions that they taught me in my daily life. I also think it is important to support events that showcase our community and culture. Mariachi and Folklórico dance are some of my favorite performances to attend in and around Indianapolis.

Q: What are your favorite parts of Hispanic culture to share with others?

AM: I enjoy sharing food and recipes with others, and it always fills my heart when my friends send me pictures of the dishes they make on their own!

Q: What is your favorite Hispanic cultural dish?

AM: My grandma’s tamales with nopales (cactus) and queso – she would make those especially for me. Chilaquiles are a close second!

Q: What is a family tradition that is important to you that ties back to your cultural heritage?

AM: We have an annual family reunion that has been going on for at least the past 39 years. The day is filled with music, good food (obviously), Lotería, piñatas, horseshoe, and many other games and treats. I have a large extended family, so this is the only time I get to visit with many of them.
