IMS fall events
IMS Writers’ Roundtable, Vol. 35: Favorite Fall IMS Event?

Today’s question: Which of the four remaining events this September and October at Indianapolis Motor Speedway are you anticipating the most?

Curt Cavin: The Porsche spirit in me heavily leans toward the Together Fest, but I need to select the Indianapolis 8 Hour race weekend on Oct. 15-17 as I’ve long been interested in seeing proper endurance races at IMS – after all, that’s essentially what the early 500-Mile International Sweepstakes were. A 24-hour event obviously requires lights and might be too much for the track’s neighbors, but perhaps a 12-hour could be ideal.

Zach Horrall: I have to say that I’m very intrigued by the Porsche Sportscar Together Fest happening this Friday through Sunday at IMS. For starters, it’s a weekend of all things Porsche at IMS, a combination of two iconic brands that car and motorsports fans will adore in and of itself. But when you combine it with a festival-like atmosphere with interactive experiences, live entertainment and racing, it becomes much more than cars on track. It’s a full-on event. Sign me up!

Paul Kelly: I must admit: I’m a sucker for the 58th SCCA National Championship Runoffs on Oct. 1-3. It’s the Super Bowl and Indy 500 of amateur racing in the United States wrapped into one, and it’s only the second time this prestigious event is taking place at IMS, with the first in 2017. Fans never will see a greater array of racing machinery at one time at IMS, with national champions determined in 26 separate classes including approximately 900 vehicles. Plus, the joy you see from each of these winners at the Racing Capital of the World is just as genuine as from the winners of the Indianapolis 500, Verizon 200 at the Brickyard or any other major event at IMS. In fact, it might even be more ebullient. Most of these drivers dreamed to get a chance to race at IMS, figuring it may never happen because they’re amateurs. So to get a chance to race on this hallowed ground and win? That’s something else. Racing would be nowhere without the grassroots, and few race weekends celebrate the grassroots with more gusto than the SCCA Runoffs.
