Today’s question: The NASCAR Cup Series and NTT INDYCAR SERIES are running races on the Brickyard Weekend Aug. 13-15 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, with the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix on Saturday, Aug. 14 for INDYCAR and the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard on Sunday, Aug. 15 for the Cup Series. Which driver in each series would you like to see try “double duty” in both races if it was possible, and why?
Curt Cavin: I’m going to bend the rules a bit and choose Austin Cindric, a part-time Cup driver who has shown to be a terrific road racer in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. I’d love to see his father, Team Penske president Tim Cindric, try to call Josef Newgarden’s race while trying to keep an eye on the INDYCAR debut of his 22-year-old son. Switching sides, I think Newgarden or Scott Dixon are the most likely candidates to one day try a Cup road race, but imagine how fun it would be to watch Will Power in one!
Zach Horrall: Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has repeatedly expressed interest in competing in the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, and he competed in the INDYCAR iRacing Challenge last spring. I’ve wanted to see him in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for some time now, so he’s my pick. It’s a tough challenge, but I think if anyone can do it and succeed, it’s Busch. On the other side, I want Scott McLaughlin’s #ScottLearnsAmerica social media tour to take him to NASCAR for a day. His time in Australian V8 Supercars in the form of three titles would certainly be enough background to give him a fighting chance in the Sunday race. I’d love to see how he stacks up against America’s best stock car racers.
Paul Kelly: Oooh, Austin Cindric: I didn’t think of that one, Curt. Good one! But I’m still sticking with Chase Elliott. He’s the best road racer in NASCAR now, and I would love to see if that skill translates to an NTT INDYCAR SERIES car. As for INDYCAR drivers running the Cup Series race, I want two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato to do “the double.” It’s probably impossible due to his longtime ties with Honda, which doesn’t compete in NASCAR’s three main national touring series, but Taku’s “no attack, no chance” style would be spectacular in a Cup car.
