Q. In what year did the first Red Bull Indianapolis GP take place?
A. 2008. Valentino Rossi of Italy won on a Fiat Yamaha Team bike.
Q. Was it the first motorcycle race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?
A. No. The very first motorized event at IMS was a series of motorcycle races on the 2.5-mile oval on Aug. 14, 1909. The next motorcycle event at IMS came 99 years later, the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP.
Q. The Red Bull Indianapolis GP consists of how many laps?
A. The MotoGP race is 28 laps, the Moto2 race is 26 laps, and the 125cc race is 23 laps.
Q. Are there pit stops in the races?
A. Usually not. The races are sprint events, run without pit stops. The only time riders enter the pits is to switch bikes in changing weather conditions or because of a mechanical problem.
Q. What is the distance of one lap around the road course?
A. 2.621 miles. The track has 16 turns and incorporates the front straightaway, part of the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 of the oval and the infield of the oval. There are 10 left turns and six right turns.
Q. What direction do riders travel on the road course?
A. Counterclockwise, the same as competitors in IMS oval events.
Q. Does the event still take place if it's raining?
A. Yes. Riders in all three categories compete in the rain on motorcycles equipped with grooved rain tires.
Q. Has any MotoGP rider finished on the podium (top three) in each of the first two Red Bull Indianapolis GP events?
A. Yes. Jorge Lorenzo of Spain finished third in 2008 and won in 2009. Nicky Hayden of the United States finished second in 2008 and third in 2009.
