Grammy Award-winning country music sensation Martina McBride will sing “America The Beautiful” during pre-race ceremonies at the 98th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on Sunday, May 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
McBride, who sang the national anthem at IMS prior to the start of the 2012 Indianapolis 500, is known for having one of the most spectacular voices in any genre of music. She has been awarded 14 Gold Records, nine Platinum honors, three Double Platinum Records and two Triple Platinum awards, and been recognized for selling 18 million units. The Country Music Association has named her its Female Vocalist of the Year four times, and the Academy of Country Music has presented her with its Top Female honor on three occasions.
"I'm looking forward to being back at the Indy 500 and singing one of my favorite songs for all the race fans,” McBride said.
The Recording Academy has nominated McBride for a Grammy Award 14 times, and her participation on the all-star collection “Amazing Grace” helped earn that recording a Grammy in 1996. She was honored with induction into the hallowed cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1995, and has also been recognized by Billboard, Broadcast Music Inc., the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the Country Music Television Video Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, The American Country Awards and The Nashville Network/Music City News Awards.
McBride has many certificates and accolades for her string of broadcast successes. She is ranked as the most played woman vocalist on country radio during the eleven-year period between 1999 and 2010. To date, she has had 20 top-10 hits and six No. 1 smashes, and achieved such astounding success by singing lyrics of substance and songs that challenge listeners.
McBride’s solo hits include such enduring classics as “Wild Angels,” “Safe in the Arms of Love,” “Wrong Again,” “Blessed,” “My Baby Loves Me (Just the Way That I Am),” “Life #9,” “Love’s the Only House,” “Whatever You Say,” “Where Would You Be,” “In My Daughter’s Eyes” and “Independence Day.”
McBride made history last month, with her new album “Everlasting,” as the first solo female artist to debut at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart with an independently released and distributed album in the chart's 50-year history. Martina delivers powerful interpretations of iconic soul songs while paying tribute to the original 1950s and '60s recording process. ‘Everlasting’ was produced by Grammy's "Album of the Year" and "Producer of the Year" winner Don Was.
“We were fortunate to have Martina McBride perform the national anthem in 2012 and we are very glad she is returning to perform ‘America the Beautiful’ prior to the Indianapolis 500 this year,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “Her beautiful and passionate voice along with her remarkable stage presence, are a perfect addition to the excitement and the pageantry leading up to the command to start engines for the 98th Running of the Indianapolis 500.”

In addition to McBride’s performance, musical tributes to our nation and the State of Indiana during Indianapolis 500 pre-race ceremonies will include famed actress and singer Florence Henderson with her traditional singing of “God Bless America,” and country superstar LeAnn Rimes singing the national anthem. Fans will also join beloved Indianapolis 500 legend Jim Nabors in singing “(Back Home Again in) Indiana” prior to the start of the race. Nabors’ rendition of the song, which he will perform for the 35th and final time at IMS on Sunday, has been a cherished Indianapolis 500 tradition since he first performed it in 1972.
