By the time he arrives at the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard, Darren Law will have competed in 157 GRAND-AM Rolex Series races. That’s more Daytona Prototype starts than any other driver.
Law, 44, is the GRAND-AM’s iron man, and he’s also one of the top drivers in the series. He finished third in the DP standings in 2011 and he’s tied for fifth place halfway through the 2012 campaign, with a victory at the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
Though born in Ontario, Canada, Law was raised in Orange County, California and is a longtime resident of Phoenix. Law calls legendary road racer Bob Bondurant a friend and mentor, and he taught at the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving for several years. In fact, he still serves as a one-on-one driver coach when he’s not racing.
“It keeps me in a race-car all year round and keeps me sharp,” Law says. “I think it helps from a driver standpoint to be able to explain how to go faster, rather than just trying to always figure it out for yourself.”
In addition to his longtime participation in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series, Law also drives in selected American Le Mans Series events for Flying Lizard Motorsports, and he competed in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2009-11.
“I've been doing both prototype and GT since ‘04, so I’m comfortable with it,” Law related. “But the cars are very, very different to drive. The prototype is very stiff and the GT car moves around a lot.”
Law counts his biggest victory as the 2009 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, where he co-drove with David Donohue, Buddy Rice and Antonio Garcia. The emotional win came near the hometown of the Brumos Racing team (predecessor to the Action Express Racing team Law currently drives for) and it was also 40 years after Donohue’s father Mark had won the same event.
“This is probably the hardest 24 hour race I’ve ever done,” Law said after the Daytona win. “The pace was very fast and we had to drive very hard.”
Law is renowned in the DP series as a good guy to be teamed with.
“I enjoy the camaraderie and having a teammate to work with,” he says. “If you have the right driving partner, there are no excuses about your lap times, because you have a direct comparison in the same car to your co-driver. You can also feed off each other – if one person's quicker in one area, you can learn from each other.”
