One day after the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard concluded at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a historic triumph by Indiana’s own Jeff Gordon, the iconic 2.5 mile oval settled into a quiet-but-steady buzz of activity. Preparations are underway for the roar of engines to return next week – on two wheels. The seventh annual Red Bull Indianapolis GP visits from Aug. 8-10, the tenth of 18 races on the MotoGP World Championship schedule. Spain’s Marc Marquez returns to defend his title on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course while looking to extend his incredible 2014 record to a perfect 10-for-10 races won. The defending World Champion will be pursued by 22 competitors from around the world including American Colin Edwards on the 16-turn, 2.591-mile course that includes a portion of the famed oval. Fans will be treated to a full three days of on-track action in MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and the AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series, while off the track there will be concerts and interactive fun on the popular Moto Midway and the Vendor Marketplace sponsored by Westfield Powersports. After the gates close at IMS, motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to attend Motorcycles on Meridian in downtown Indianapolis. It will be another hit weekend, right on the heels of the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard. Gordon put a historic exclamation point on the proceedings with a fifth win at IMS in the Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com, breaking a tie with Jimmie Johnson for the most Sprint Cup Series wins at IMS and tying Michael Schumacher for the most wins all-time in a major event at the Racing Capital of the World. “As a kid growing up I just idolized the drivers that raced here, and to me this was just the ultimate place,” said Gordon, who spent part of his youth in Pittsboro, Ind. “For me, personally, this (win) is as good as it gets.” The weekend also saw Ty Dillon score his first Nationwide Series win in the Lilly Diabetes 250 and the team of Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi win the Brickyard Grand Prix in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship’s debut race at IMS. *** To buy reserved and general admission tickets for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, visit www.ims.com/tickets, call the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ticket office at 317-492-6700 or 800-822-INDY, or visit the ticket office on the first floor of the IMS Administration Building at 4790 W. 16th St. in Indianapolis.
