The 85th Running of the Indianapolis 500 was held on Sunday, May 27, 2001 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The field saw the return of Roger Penske and Michael Andretti to the Indy 500, Tony Stewart make his second attempt at the double and rookie Brazilian named Helio Castroneves win it all in his first visit to the Brickyard.
