Today’s question: What driver who doesn’t compete regularly in United States Auto Club National Midget Championship races would you most enjoy seeing run in the Driven2SaveLives BC39 Powered by NOS Energy Drink on Aug. 18-19 at The Dirt Track at IMS?
Curt Cavin: Kyle Larson needs to be a regular in this event, but let’s assume everyone feels that way. Thus, I’ll go with someone to my knowledge has not driven a midget. Give me McLaren’s Lando Norris, the F1 driver who won last year’s INDYCAR iRacing Challenge race at Circuit of The Americas. Norris would bring the attention of global fans of the sport, and he is a young and adventurous driver surely up for this type of challenge. His boss, Zak Brown, might even let him do it.
Zach Horrall: The driver I’ve always wanted to see race in the BC39, and someone I think this Hoosier crowd would go crazy for, is Tony Stewart. After his NASCAR Cup Series career ended in 2016, the three-time NASCAR Cup Series and 1997 INDYCAR SERIES champion has been slinging dirt across the country. I know he spends most of his time in sprint cars, but wouldn’t it be cool to see Stewart hit The Dirt Track at IMS? This track was inspired by a “gift” during his last year in NASCAR when IMS President J. Douglas Boles built a makeshift dirt track in Turn 3 for him to turn laps on. He’s raced in the Indianapolis 500 and won the Brickyard 400 as a driver and owner, so why not add to his list of accomplishments at the Racing Capital of the World? I’m certain he would contend for the win.
Paul Kelly: Donny Schatz. He’s one of the greatest winged sprint car drivers in history, with 10 World of Outlaws championships and 10 wins at the Knoxville Nationals. He just earned his 300th career WoO victory last Saturday at Dubuque, Iowa. I can’t be the only one who is curious to see how this legend would fare without a wing over his head against the best USAC Midget drivers in the country on the multi-groove quarter-mile oval at IMS. Plus, Schatz drives for Tony Stewart Racing, so maybe the team could field an extra car for the boss. That would fulfill my and Zach’s wishes in one night!
