New Era of Ambitious Facility Transformation Shifts into High Gear at IMS
New Era of Ambitious Facility Transformation Shifts into High Gear at IMS

Five miles of new fencing, a massive new Pagoda Plaza Media Wall, renovated and refreshed concession stands and restrooms, the introduction of 5G connectivity and an elevated Victory Circle highlight the dawn of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s new era.

The ambitious project to transform and enhance the fan experience at the 111-year-old track has taken shape since Roger Penske took ownership in January.

The upgrades will be seen for the first time this Fourth of July weekend when INDYCAR and NASCAR converge for a first-of-its-kind combined tripleheader racing event, but fans will see the reveal for themselves in August when the 104th Indianapolis 500 is held with spectators in attendance.

“From day one, the fan experience has been our top priority,” Penske said. “We’ve worked at a pace befitting the world’s greatest racetrack, completing projects in every corner of our massive venue.

“The end result is a more convenient, entertaining and world-class trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

The main pathways to the IMS grandstands – along Georgetown Road and at the famed Gate 1 plaza and Gate 9 – have been reimagined, with wider lanes, redesigned public plazas with refreshed concession stands and restrooms, and new pavement that immediately enhance the customer experience upon entry.

2020 IMS Facility Enhancements

The in-race experience will be significantly improved with more than 30 new LED video display boards installed around the racetrack, including the revolutionary 104-foot by 20-foot Pagoda Plaza Media Wall that transforms Pagoda Plaza into even more of a destination spot for race fans. How large is the media wall? Eighteen Indy cars could be placed on top of it.

With 5G connectivity, cutting-edge network capability is available for the first time. Real-time insights and information will come right to the hands of race fans with expanded 5G network from Verizon.

Gate 1 and Gate 2, two of the main Speedway entrances, have been upgraded with lighted signs that ensure people always know they are driving by a legendary and historic destination.

A new lift in Victory Circle now will elevate race winners onto Victory Podium, allowing fans to better see and experience post-race celebrations.

Beautification of the facility includes 3 acres of sod planted and placed throughout IMS. Seventy-five metal-frame picnic tables have been added to fan plazas, and 250 new racing-themed flags have been raised along Georgetown Road and 16th Street.

Add in these numbers – the renovation of 50 concession stands, 225 restrooms, 3,000 tons of new concrete and 400,000 square feet of new asphalt – and the dawning of this new era takes shape.
