Matthias Dolderer didn’t need to aim for drama and flair during the inaugural Red Bull Air Race event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Oct. 1-2, 2016. German pilot Dolderer held a comfortable lead in the elite Master Class standings heading into the first air race at IMS since the nascent days of the facility, in 1909-10. He just needed to be sure and steady, avoiding mistakes in early rounds before heading to the season finale two weeks later in Las Vegas to seal his title. But IMS is the Racing Capital of the World, where headlines are made and heard around the world. Dolderer added yet another big flash of drama by clinching his first title in the world’s most prestigious aerobatic racing series by winning the round at Indianapolis. Dolderer didn’t back off at any point during the weekend. He qualified fourth, 1.3 seconds behind pole sitter Yoshihide Muroya of Japan. Then Dolderer methodically worked his through the first two rounds, beating Frenchman Nicolas Ivanoff by 1.4 seconds in the Round of 14 with the quickest time of the round. Dolderer topped pole sitter Muroya in the Round of 8 by nine-tenths of a second, again with the quickest time of the round. That trend continued in the Final 4. Dolderer crushed the field, beating runner-up Nigel Lamb of Great Britain by nearly 1 second – a significant gap in the razor-thin time margins of the Red Bull Air Race Championship – to win the race and clinch the title. Emotion flowed freely from Dolderer both in the cockpit and on the ground after his victory. His emphatic, “Yahoo! Whoa, yes, baby!” screams in the cockpit were reminiscent of the exuberant post-checkered flag celebrations of Takuma Sato and Will Power after their Indianapolis 500 victories in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Dolderer also dedicated his victory to Austrian pilot Hannes Arch, who was contending for the Master Class title in 2016 before tragically passing away in a helicopter crash in Austria just a month before the Indianapolis round.
