Kellett Picks Perfect Time To Speed to First Career Indy Lights Pole

Dalton Kellett earned his first career Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires pole position at the series’ biggest race, speeding to the top spot for the Freedom 100 in qualifying Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Kellett, from Toronto, turned the best two-lap average speed around the 2.5-mile oval, 195.027 mph, in the No. 28 entry fielded by Andretti Autosport.

“I’m just in awe of the whole situation,” Kellett said. “I’m really happy and very grateful to have the opportunity to be here. Starting on the pole in an honor and I can’t wait to see how the race plays out tomorrow.”

The 16th annual Freedom 100 starts at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Miller Lite Carb Day at IMS.

Andretti Autosport locked out the front row for the 40-lap race. Series points leader Patricio O’Ward qualified second at 194.901 mph in the No. 27 Andretti Autosport entry.

The Andretti domination continued on the inside of the second row. Ryan Norman qualified third at 194.070 in the No. 48 Andretti Autosport car. Victor Franzoni was the top qualifier from a team other than Andretti Autosport, ending up fourth at 194.059 in the No. 23 Juncos Racing entry.

Davey Hamilton Jr., son of Indianapolis 500 veteran Davey Hamilton, qualified seventh at 193.302 as the first car on track and then rushed to Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana, where he won the pole for Little 500 sprint car race Saturday night.
