Rahal Jumps to Top of Charts at 226; Kanaan Lurks as Speedy Threat

Graham Rahal jumped to the top spot in practice Thursday for the 102nd Indianapolis 500, but Tony Kanaan continues to lurk as one of the fastest drivers this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Rahal was the fastest among the full complement of 35 drivers who turned laps under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s, with a top lap of 226.047 mph in the No. 15 United Rentals Honda. Rahal’s top lap came with the benefit of an aerodynamic tow, as his best solo lap was 219.368 mph.

The fast lap was a strong rebound for Rahal, who was 34th out of 35 on the speed charts Wednesday at 222.102.

“It's cooler to lead practice than be 34th because you don't have to answer all the questions about why you're 34th, all that sort of thing,” Rahal said. “For sure, today was in the end a very good day.

“We had the car. We showed that it had the pace, number one. Number two, at the end of the day we found and made some big strides with our race car. That's more what I was focused on.”

Kanaan was second overall today at 225.896 in the No. 14 ABC Supply AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet. He also towed his way toward the top of the charts, as his best no-tow lap was 221.616. But Kanaan was the fastest driver without a tow Wednesday, at 223.048. And 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner Kanaan led the open test at IMS on April 30 at 226.181.

“It's been a good week for us,” Kanaan said. “We unloaded pretty quick since the test. Now it's just the track playing some mind games with you. Some days are better; some days are worse.

“It's more of a gathering information. Sometimes you have a good car; sometimes you have a bad car. Sometimes you get a good draft; sometimes you run alone. Saying all that, it's over. Tomorrow it's just Fast Friday, and you worry about four laps. That's all you got to worry about. Then four laps the next day, and hopefully on Sunday.”

Marco Andretti was third Thursday at 225.584 in the No. 98 U.S. Concrete/Curb Honda. Andretti also is a strong contender to earn a spot in the Fast Nine Shootout on Pole Day on Sunday, as he led Wednesday at 227.053 – the fastest lap of the month.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner Ed Carpenter was fourth Thursday at 225.093 in the No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet. Sage Karam rounded out the top five at 224.920 in the No. 24 Wix Filters DRR Chevrolet.

The first incident of the week took place with 22 minutes remaining in practice. JR Hildebrand made light right-side contact with the SAFER Barrier at the exit of Turn 3 and secondary contact with the wall in the north short chute while running in traffic in the No. 66 Salesforce DRR Chevrolet. There was light damage to the car, and Hildebrand was checked and released from the IU Health Emergency Medical Center and cleared to drive.

“The car felt out of the ordinary,” Hildebrand said. “I didn’t feel like I was losing the car at all. I thought for sure I could save the car, which why I’m a little confused on what happened. I did have enough warning to keep it under control.

“It felt like I had a wacky wheel of a shopping cart because the car kept wobbling a bit. But I’m fine and ready to go tomorrow.”

Unpredictability still reigned in the third day of IMS oval practice for the sleek, new-look Verizon IndyCar Series car, which features a new universal aero kit with reduced downforce. Chevrolet-powered cars took the first three spots Tuesday on Opening Day, while Honda drivers took the top four spots Wednesday.

Honda and Chevy split the top four spots today, as the balance of power was the most even of the week.

Another element will be added to the intriguing mix during practice from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. tomorrow, known as Fast Friday. Turbocharger boost will be increased for all engines, adding approximately 50 more horsepower. That extra boost will remain during Crown Royal Armed Forces Qualifying Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, so drivers will focus on finding clear track for qualifying simulation runs Friday.

Bump Day is set for Saturday. Pole Day – including the Fast Nine Shootout for pole – is scheduled for Sunday.
