A product from a town of 1,500 residents will be on display for millions to see when racing returns to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May 2016. New Paris, Indiana, is the home of Merchants Metals, a leading manufacturer of fence mesh. The company is making the fence that will surround the 2.5-mile oval, one of several major facility improvements in IMS’ Project 100 construction. IMS President Doug Boles visited the Northern Indiana company on Monday to tour the facility alongside media to see firsthand how the fence of the (near) future at IMS is coming together. The fence will not only better protect fans from any potential debris that comes from the racetrack, but will be easier to see through for fans and a worldwide television audience on ABC. “It’s going to transform the way our customer experiences the Speedway,” Boles said. “Who would have known that in New Paris, Indiana, a town of 1,500, they’re the best in the world at creating fence mesh?” Boles’ tour moved on to South Bend in the afternoon and a “Town Hall”-style meeting with fans at the Studebaker National Museum. Indiana-made Studebaker automobiles competed in the “500” in the 1930s and served as Pace Cars into the 1960s, providing a natural tie-in for Boles’ visit. Dozens of fans and longtime ticketholders (some from as far back as the 1950s) turned out to hear Boles’ thoughts on Project 100, the upcoming 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 and to ask a few questions about the Verizon IndyCar Series, the “500” past and present and their experiences as fans. Boles’ fan tour will visit other Indiana cities in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on IMS.com for more details.
