Lilly, IMS Announce Collaboration For NASCAR Nationwide Series Race

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Eli Lilly and Company announced today a multi-year agreement in which Lilly will be the title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Nationwide Series race at IMS, now known as the Lilly Diabetes 250.

Scheduled for Saturday, July 26, the Lilly Diabetes 250 will be run on the famed IMS 2.5-mile oval and will take place during the third-annual Kroger Super Weekend. Previous IMS Nationwide Series race winners include Brad Keselowski in 2012 and Kyle Busch last year.

This title sponsorship goes hand-in-hand with Lilly’s mission of raising awareness about diabetes in Indiana and across the world. The event will serve as an ideal platform to support those affected by diabetes, as well as provide education about this rampant disease.

“We’re proud to announce that Lilly is providing the entitlement sponsorship for the Lilly Diabetes 250 Nationwide Series race at IMS,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “Lilly is an Indianapolis-based company recognized globally as a forerunner in fighting diseases and making lives better for people all over the world, and we greatly look forward to working with them in promoting diabetes awareness during the Lilly Diabetes 250.”

A leader in diabetes care for more than 90 years, Lilly delivers an array of treatment options as well as a variety of programs and resources that can help people overcome the daily challenges of managing diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects approximately 382 million people worldwide and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) predicts that by 2030, that figure will grow to 592 million people.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 714,000 children and adults in Indiana suffer from all forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2 and gestational.

“Diabetes is a serious problem not just in Indiana but around the world. We know the reach NASCAR has and we are honored to join our neighbors at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to sponsor this race,” said Mike Mason, vice president, U.S., Lilly Diabetes. “We hope our involvement will provide the awareness that is essential to prevention and management of this disease. By working with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, we hope to get people talking about diabetes with their doctor, as well as their friends and family.”

Lilly Diabetes is a sponsor of NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Ryan Reed, who competes full time for Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) and has type 1 diabetes. In October 2013, RFR announced a partnership with the American Diabetes Association’s Drive to Stop Diabetes and Lilly Diabetes. Reed, who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 17, drives the No. 16 American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes Presented by Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang.

“I couldn’t be more excited to compete for the first time at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Lilly Diabetes 250,” Reed said. “To have the opportunity to race at the home of Lilly’s corporate headquarters in Indianapolis is a great honor and something I’ll never forget. I’m grateful to everyone at Lilly Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association for the opportunity to join them in promoting diabetes awareness with the hope of someday eliminating this devastating disease.”

Kroger Super Weekend at IMS will include the Lilly Diabetes 250 Nationwide Series race and NASCAR Sprint Cup practice and qualifying on Saturday, July 26. Thursday will feature TUDOR United SportsCar Championship practice and qualifying; and NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series practice and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship racing will take place on Friday. The weekend will conclude on Sunday, July 27 with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 21st annual Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com.

Raikkonen's Interest Ripples the NASCAR Waters
While there is decent diversity of personality among the ranks of stock car racing's finest, few NASCAR drivers have ever been described as laconic or insouciant. Nothing so far disputes this. Reporting on Raikkonen's impending arrival has dwelled mainly on what others have said about him, not what he has said.
