Reducing the carbon imprint created by on-track emissions at NASCAR races is the goal of a collaborative initiative between the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the NASCAR Green Tree Planting Program Delivered by UPS and the Arbor Day Foundation, which included planting 90 trees Friday, Nov. 15 at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind. The NASCAR Green Clean Air Tree Planting Program was introduced in 2008, with the original goal of planting 10 trees for every green flag dropped during a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, offsetting the carbon emissions of on-track racing occurring at those events. One mature tree over the course of its lifetime absorbs about 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide, the same amount emitted by a Sprint Cup car driving 500 miles. NASCAR joined with the UPS tree planting program before the 2013 racing season in a shared program involving more than 20 local tree planting events, with more than 8,000 trees being planted throughout the year. NASCAR Green works closely with affiliated motor speedways in selecting local recipients for the program’s trees. IMS chose the 400-acre Grand Park Sports Campus because of its commitment to youth sports that complement the Speedway’s own youth initiatives. “We’re very happy to join with the NASCAR Green Tree Planting Program, UPS, the Arbor Day Foundation and the Grand Park Sports Campus for this worthwhile project,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president, who attended the event. “We’re always looking for new and better ways to help preserve the environment, especially in our backyard.” Green initiatives at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway include the ongoing construction of a 25-acre solar farm on IMS property northeast of the track. The IMS installation will be the largest solar-power system hosted at any sporting facility in the world, with 39,312 solar modules generating a total of 9.6 megawatts of power. This commitment to solar generation at the Racing Capital of the World is equal to offsetting 10,288 tons of carbon annually. Previous on-track green initiatives at IMS include the use of fuel-grade ethanol to power cars in the Indianapolis 500, E85 fuel powering NASCAR cars in the Crown Royal Presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard and the Emerging Tech Day during the Indianapolis 500, including the Purdue eV Grand Prix. *** 2014 ticket information: Ticket information is available for the four events in 2014 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, 98th Indianapolis 500, Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard and Red Bull Indianapolis GP.
