Dan Wheldon Memorial Service scheduled for October 23

INDYCAR will hold a public memorial service to celebrate the life of IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon at 4 p.m. (ET) Oct. 23 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

The memorial also will be broadcast on www.indycar.com, VERSUS and locally on WRTV-6 and WTTV-4.

Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and 2005 IZOD IndyCar Series champion, died from injuries suffered in a racing accident Oct. 16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He is survived by his wife, Susie, and two young sons. Wheldon was 33.

The Virginia Street parking garage will be open free of charge to augment on-street parking. A public remembrance ceremony will be held in Wheldon's adopted home of St. Petersburg, Fla., at 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at city hall. Mayor Bill Foster and St. Petersburg City Council will issue a resolution of bereavement.

The Dan Wheldon Family Trust Fund has been established for the financial security of Wheldon's family. The public can make contributions to the Dan Wheldon Family Trust Fund starting Oct. 19 at:

The Dan Wheldon Family Trust Fund is a taxable trust fund for the benefit of the Wheldon family. Contributions to it are not considered charitable contributions, and could have federal gift tax consequences.
