Indy 500 Veteran Gregoire To Conduct Teen Driving School At IMS

Former INDYCAR driver Stephan Gregoire has announced the launch of a new teen driving school, the Miles Ahead Teen Driving Intensive.

The school will provide specialized instruction to licensed teenage drivers to improve their driving skills and decision-making behind the wheel. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be the host site for the program, which will include a team of instructors comprised of Firestone Indy Lights and IZOD IndyCar Series drivers.

“This is a very exciting day of transition in my life,” said Gregoire, a seven-time Indianapolis 500 competitor who last raced in the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing second in the GT1 class. “While I will no longer be racing, I am extremely proud and excited to announce the Miles Ahead Teen Driving Intensive. This is the culmination of years of effort with my business partner, Ted Woerner, to develop a special program at the Speedway that would repay IMS, in some small way, for all it did for my career.

“We intend to make a real difference in the driving skills of teenage drivers to reduce their chances of becoming involved in collisions on public roads.”

Miles Ahead will include classroom instruction and extensive time behind the wheel of a passenger vehicle. Driving time will be conducted on a portion of the IMS infield road course and various access roads inside the facility. The first Miles Ahead classes will take place Oct. 29-30 and Nov. 5-6, with additional dates to be scheduled throughout 2012.

“The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was created a century ago as a proving and testing ground for the automotive industry to increase reliability and safety of passenger vehicles,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and CEO. “Miles Ahead will further that original mission by helping younger drivers learn how to operate their vehicles in a safer manner and how to be prepared to make correct, safe decisions when faced with unexpected obstacles or driving conditions.”

An exciting manufacturer partnership is being finalized, with a separate announcement to be made soon revealing the Official Car of Miles Ahead, Gregoire said.

In addition to individual class registrations, Miles Ahead will offer group sales to companies to train children of employees or customers. There also will be a scholarship program to award school slots to applicants in need.
