NASCAR Sprint Cup star and 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman enjoyed an exciting day at Camp Atterbury in central Indiana on Tuesday, June 28 that began with an autograph session where he met many of the soldiers based there.

Other activities Newman took part in included lunch with the troops, rappelling from a tower, riding in an armored personnel carrier and shooting a 50-caliber machine gun.

When Newman’s day at Camp Atterbury was complete he boarded an iconic U.S. Army Vietnam era Huey Helicopter provided by Indiana Air Search and Rescue for a quick flight to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where he appeared before the local media. Newman, who is a Purdue University graduate, discussed a variety of subjects, including driving in the 2011 Brickyard 400 on Sunday, July 31 at IMS.

A native of South Bend, Ind., Newman will drive the No. 39 Haas Automation/U.S. Army Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing, co-owned by fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart, at the Brickyard 400. Newman is 10th in the Sprint Cup Series standings this season, with four top-five finishes and seven top-ten finishes.
