Indianapolis 500 veteran Geoff Brabham didn’t waste his chance at redemption, winning Sunday in the final day of Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) action in the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ten-time Indy 500 starter and sports car legend Brabham won the SVRA Group 2 feature race Sunday on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course at IMS in the No. 83 1971 Brabham BT35-31. That car was designed and built by the constructor started and owned by his late father, Indy 500 veteran and legendary three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jack Brabham. The victory came a day after Geoff Brabham didn’t turn a lap in the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am Presented by RACER feature race Saturday. Event rules required that the amateur driver on each team start the race and turn over their car to their pro teammate no later than Lap 10, but the No. 46 1969 Chevrolet Corvette that Brabham shared with Jody O’Donnell suffered suspension failure after completing just four laps and before Brabham could get behind the wheel. Brabham’s son, Matt, won the Pro-Am with amateur teammate Michael Donohue. IMS President Doug Boles finished second in his class in the Group 2 race today while driving the No. 111 1968 Caldwell D9 Formula Ford. That completed a successful weekend for Boles, who won his class in the first race for Group 2 on Saturday. Geoff Brabham was one of two Indy 500 veterans who finished on the podium during the final day of competition among 12 SVRA classes. Eleven-time Indy starter Davey Hamilton placed second with amateur teammate George Del Canto in the one-hour Vintage Classic Endurance race. They shared the No. 33A 1969 Ford Mustang. Reigning series champion Ernie Francis Jr. won the Trans Am by Pirelli TA class race Sunday in his No. 98 Ford Mustang. Francis led the last 20 laps of the 41-lap feature race. Two-time TA class season champion Amy Ruman finished second in the No. 23 Chevrolet Corvette. The TA, TA3 and TA4 classes ran their feature race simultaneously. Tim Kezman won the TA3 class and finished fourth overall in his No. 44 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Warren Dexter won the TA4 class in the No. 61 Ginetta G55.
