Opening-day qualifications for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil are in a holding pattern after a short shower halted activities at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ten drivers completed successful qualifying attempts before the rain began falling at 11:52 a.m. ET. Update: Qualifying is scheduled to resume at 4:30 p.m. ET. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was the fastest of the 10 qualifiers with a four-lap average speed of 228.919 mph in the No. 3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet. Teammate Simon Pagenaud was second at 228.304 mph in the No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet. Another 24 cars remain in the line when conditions permit qualifying to continue. James Hinchcliffe is the next driver scheduled to qualify in the No. 5 Arrow Electronics SPM Honda. One driver, Oriol Servia in the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa/Manitowoc Honda, waved off his qualifying attempt after turning two laps averaging less than 200 mph. Qualifying today is scheduled to run until 5:50 p.m. and will establish the 33 cars-driver combinations set to compete in the 102nd Indianapolis 500 on May 27. Sunday’s second day of qualifying will determine the starting order of those 33 cars, including the Fast Nine Shootout to decide the Verizon P1 Award pole winner. Castroneves has won the Indy 500 pole four times and would move within one of all-time Indy poles leader Rick Mears if the Brazilian is the fastest qualifier on Sunday.
