The pairing of Indianapolis 500 veteran Richie Hearn and amateur Clair Schwendeman could be the drivers to beat in the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am race Saturday, June 17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after Hearn turned the top lap in practice Friday. Hearn, who made seven “500” starts between 1996 and 2007, was quickest at 1 minute, 39.952 seconds in the No. 37 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course at IMS. 1992 Indianapolis 500 pole sitter Roberto Guerrero was second at 1:40.470 in the No. 46A 1969 Chevrolet Corvette. Two-time “500” starter Max Papis was third at 1:40.488 in the No. 23 1970 Ford Boss 302. Thirty-three Indianapolis 500 veterans and Brickyard 400 winner Bill Elliott are paired with top drivers and car owners from the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) for the featured event in the fourth annual Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 45-minute race, which includes a mandatory five-minute pit stop, starts at 1 p.m. Fans are invited to visit the pits starting at noon to see the cars up close and talk with drivers. All drivers in the Pro-Am race compete in machines from the “Group 6” SVRA class, which includes 1963 to 1972 vintage Corvettes, Camaros, Cobras and Mustangs. Indy 500 veteran Davy Jones and Larry Ligas will share a 1961 Jaguar XKE in the race, adding even more interesting visual and audio variety to the field of diverse, iconic machines. Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was sixth at 1:41.020 in the No. 42 1969 Chevrolet Corvette. Elliott, paired with legendary NASCAR team owner and crew chief Ray Evernham was eighth at 1:41.465 in the No. 9 1970 Ford Boss 302. Other Brickyard legends competing in the race include four-time Indianapolis winner Al Unser, Paul Tracy, Jimmy Vasser, Geoff Brabham, Willy T. Ribbs, Sarah Fisher and Lyn St. James. In the first of two Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup races this weekend, rookie Robert Stout edged Patrick Gallagher by .0632 of a second in a thrilling side-by-side finish late Friday afternoon. All four classes of Trans Am presented by Pirelli also were on track Friday, with the TA, TA3 and TA4 classes qualifying for their combined race Saturday. TA class points leader Ernie Francis Jr. won the pole with a top lap of 1:25.964 in his No. 98 BreathlessProRacing/Beta Tools Ford Mustang. Preston Calvert won the pole for the TA3 class at 1:31.4 in the No. 76 CalvertDynamics/BoysRepublic Corvette. Brian Kleeman captured the pole in the TA4 class with a top lap of 1:33.1 in the No. 07 DWW Motorsports Ford Mustang. The combined TA/TA3/TA4 feature race starts at 2:40 p.m. Saturday. The race is 42 laps or 75 minutes, whichever comes first. TA2 class competitors will qualify at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and race at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Racing also will take place in all 12 SVRA vintage car groups all day Saturday, and vintage motorcycle racing also will be held. Other attractions include the Hagerty Insurance “shine and show” car corral, a “Celebration of Vintage Motorcycles” with vintage motorcycle displays and an oval exhibition featuring a race car show of judged competition for the A.J.
