Motorcycles will join the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational for the first time this weekend, as classic two-wheeled machines join their four-wheeled cousins at this festival of speed June 16-18. Vintage motorcycle racing will take place in partnership with the HMGP organization during the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association event, with on-track sessions at 10:35 a.m. and 4:05 p.m. Friday, noon and 2:45 p.m. Saturday and 10:20 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Classes range from superbike and Grand Prix machines from the 1960s through the 2000s. Marques in those classes include Norton, Triumph, Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. A Celebration of Vintage Motorcycles Show also will take place during the weekend at IMS. A select group of 50 pre-1983 stock motorcycles and racing bikes were invited to participate. And just like the racing component of the weekend, the range of marques eligible to participate in the Celebration display and contest is fantastic – Harley-Davidson, Vincent, Ducati, Triumph, BSA, Honda and many other American-made motorcycles. The bikes will be located in a special display area in the Pagoda Plaza and judged in a contest in four categories – American, British, European and Japanese, with classes in each ranging from 1900 to 1982. The addition of motorcycles will provide a cool sense of déjà vu or “back to the future” at IMS. After all, the very first motorized race at IMS was a motorcycle race Aug. 14, 1909, a national championship meet sanctioned by the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM). One of the highlights of the meet was a match race between Jake DeRosier of the factory Indian team and Ed Lingenfelder, the two biggest names in the sport. DeRosier suffered serious injuries in a crash after a blown tire in the race due to the original, rough crushed stone-and-tar surface of the IMS oval. The famous Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker also won a race on an Indian motorcycle that day at IMS. The rugged surface of the track was confirmed again during the first auto races at IMS, five days later. That caused track officials to pave the entire surface of the 2.5-mile oval with more than 3.2 million bricks that fall and winter, leading to the famous IMS nickname, “The Brickyard.” After a 99-year hiatus, motorcycle racing then returned to IMS in 2008 with the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP. The greatest superstars of recent MotoGP, including Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez, Casey Stoner and the late Nicky Hayden, all crossed the Yard of Bricks at 200 mph on their exotic prototype machines. Another chapter of the rich motorcycle racing heritage at IMS will begin this weekend.
