No, the Indy 500 has never been run on May 22nd. Up until the mid '70s, the race was almost always run on the 30th or 31st, but NEVER on a Sunday. (Only heathens would work on a Sunday) Since 1974, when TV networks got involved, the race date has floated along with Memorial weekend Sunday as Memorial day was moved to Monday. The earliest the race has been run is May 24th. This has happened in '81, '87, '92, and '98. |

Ironically, three of the four days the race was run on the 24th, an Unser won. And that just happens to be Al Unser, Sr's birthday. The streak was broken in 1998.
