Out on the course then from the Control Tower, Bob Jenkins was and reamins a Super Pro announcer....
In 1980 he had quite busy time calling in the change of leaders and Rce lead exhanges which in order went this way:
Johnny Ruthreford, Roger Rager, Geogre Snider, Gordon Johncock, Bob Unser, the lead went back to Johncock, then to Pancho Carter, back to ruterford,and then to Mario Andretti, back to Pancho Carter, then to Rutherford,then Tim Richmond led, Tom Sneva who started 33rd took the lead, then Bob Unser again, then Ruterford once more, Rick Mears led, then back in front was Bob Unser, then Ruterford, and Tom Sneva again took the lead, Rutherford retook the lead, and was overtanken by Rick Mears until, as I recall he pitted with a flat tire and Johnny Rutherford led the last 20 laps all the way home to Victory Lane!
Whew, what race huh?
