Notice Mario has burns on his face. I wonder of this picture is from pole day? The car was a relic that Clint Brawner updated and had on hand for Granatelli as a backup after the hub failure the day before. Still, he qualified it in the middle of the front row.

Mario wasn't in the 1969 Pole Day photograph! He was still recovering from the burns so his twin brother Aldo (John's dad) took his place. For all the times Mario's perfect situation went bad and he lost the 500, in 1969 the deck was stacked against him and he won. The Brawner Hawk had overheating issues and a malfunctioning gearbox and won anyway.
