Helio Castroneves was one of the unhappiest people inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after Pole Day last Sunday, but the usual, ebullient smile returned to the Brazilian’s face after Miller Lite Carb Day practice Friday. Who could blame him for either emotion? Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Castroneves qualified a career-low 19th on Pole Day in the No. 3 Shell Fuel Rewards Team Penske Chevrolet, but he rebounded to lead the final practice before the 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil at 227.377 mph. View Final Practice Results | View Combined Results “Qualifying did not work out the way we wanted,” Castroneves said. “We keep working, digging, obviously finding a way. We're going to fight extremely hard out there and showing a little bit of speed certainly helps. “I think today, it was just a great way to finish practice like this, show that we have a good car, a good balanced car, and we're going for the big one on Sunday.” Castroneves can become Sunday just the fourth driver in the history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” to earn four victories, joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. The green flag for the 101st Indianapolis 500 is set for 12:19 p.m. (ET) Sunday. Takuma Sato was the second-fastest driver during practice Friday, turning at top lap of 226.802 in the No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda. He will start fourth Sunday. 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan was third overall at 226.757 in the No. 10 NTT Data Honda. Kanaan will start seventh. Pole sitter Scott Dixon was fourth in practice at 226.685 in the No. 9 Camping World Honda. Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso rounded out the top five and was the fastest rookie at 226.608 in the No. 29 McLaren-Honda-Andretti Honda. He will start fifth Sunday. Honda-powered cars captured spots two through seven behind Castroneves in practice. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the manufacturer. Smoke trailing from the No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda driven by 2016 pole sitter James Hinchcliffe caused a lengthy caution period, and the practice was extended five minutes to provide more track time after the cleanup.
