Windy conditions limited the lap count during practice Wednesday for the 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil, but Ed Carpenter sailed to the fastest speed of 222.894 mph at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – with an important distinction. Two-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner Carpenter turned his top lap on the 2.5-mile oval without the benefit of an aerodynamic tow in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet. He was the first leader in the three days of practice without a tow. View Practice 3 Results | View Combined Results Steady winds of 10 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, kept the track quieter than the hectic practice session Tuesday. Just 21 drivers combined to turn 408 laps, 11 drivers and 1,996 laps fewer than Tuesday. Scott Dixon was second fastest at 222.894 in the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Carpenter’s teammate, JR Hildebrand, was third at 220.553. Two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso jumped to fourth overall at 219.533 in the No. 29 McLaren-Honda-Andretti Honda. The top six drivers on the speed chart all achieved their fastest laps without a tow, as the steady winds kept drivers from running in big packs like Tuesday’s 225-mph traffic jams. Practice continues from noon-6 p.m. (ET) Thursday. The 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil is scheduled for noon (ET) Sunday, May 28.
