Will Power paced a busy day of practice Tuesday for the 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil, turning a top lap of 224.656 mph to lead a Team Penske sweep of the top two spots on the speed chart. Power continues to carry momentum to the 2.5-mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from his victory Saturday in the INDYCAR Grand Prix on the IMS road course in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. He is trying to become the first driver to sweep both events in the Month of May since the INDYCAR Grand Prix joined “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on the schedule in 2014. View Practice 2 Results | View Combined Results Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second at 224.287 in the No. 3 Shell Fuel Rewards Team Penske Chevrolet. Gabby Chaves was third overall at 223.991 in the No. 88 Harding Racing Chevrolet. Chevy drivers captured seven of the top 10 spots on the speed chart. That turned the tables from Opening Day practice, when Honda-powered drivers posted eight of the top 10 speeds. Track activity picked up on another sunny day, with air temperatures in the mid-80s and track temperatures exceeding 110 degrees. Thirty-two drivers combined to turn 2,404 laps, 1,098 more laps than the same number of drivers recorded on Opening Day. Tight packs of up to 10 cars danced around the oval during the final hour of practice, simulating the give-and-take position jousts that will take place Race Day. The busiest driver Tuesday was two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso, who continued his oval education by completing 117 laps. Alonso, from Spain, drove his No. 29 McLaren-Honda-Andretti Honda in heavy traffic on an oval for the first time, ending up 24th overall at 221.029. Jack Harvey and Zach Veach each completed the final two phases of the Rookie Orientation Program. All four rookies in this year’s race – Harvey, Veach, Alonso and Ed Jones – have finished the required rookie test and are eligible to participate in qualifications this Saturday and Sunday. Looking ahead to qualifications, two-time Indianapolis 500 pole sitter Ed Carpenter was the fastest driver today without the benefit of an aerodynamic tow. His best solo lap speed was 222.842 in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet. Practice continues from noon-6 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.
