Ed Carpenter took his dream of drinking milk in Victory Circle after winning the Indianapolis 500 to a new level while helping to launch a new partnership and program between Rev and American Dairy Association Indiana. Two-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner Carpenter milked cows at Kelsay Farms in Whiteland, Indiana, to mark the start of the Winners Drink Milk campaign between Rev, a Methodist Health Foundation event presented by Fifth Third Bank, and the American Dairy Association Indiana. For nearly 85 years, winners of the Indianapolis 500 have celebrated with a ceremonial swig from a cold bottle of milk. “For me, winning at the Indianapolis 500 has always been my dream,” Verizon IndyCar Series driver/owner Carpenter said. “I have been at every Indianapolis 500 since I was 8 years old and have watched all of my heroes celebrate with milk in Victory Circle. I can’t wait to see what that victory will taste like!” A variety of officials were on hand for the event at Kelsay Farms, including IMS President Doug Boles and Kelsay Farms dairy farmer Joseph Kelsay, who will serve as the “Milk Man” in Victory Circle for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil on Sunday, May 28 at IMS. “It is an incredible honor to celebrate the nutrition that milk delivers at the Indianapolis 500, an event that brings the world’s attention to auto racing and our dairy community,” Kelsay said. Said Boles: “Seeing the winner drink a bottle of milk in Victory Lane is one of the most recognized and beloved of all the wonderful traditions surrounding the Indianapolis 500. We’re proud of our continued partnership with the American Dairy Association Indiana, and this program is yet another example of the great work it does to help Hoosiers and promote the essential work of dairy farmers throughout our state.” The goal of the partnership with the American Dairy Association Indiana is to celebrate victories big and small. In the month before the Indianapolis 500 victory and ceremonial drinking of milk, people will have the opportunity to share their own victory stories for a chance to win a grand prize. “The Winners Drink Milk Campaign adds a new pre-race and pre-Rev celebration for people to share their victory stories,” said Sally McGuffey, chief development officer, Methodist Health Foundation. “Whether that’s regaining the ability to walk, having time to play with grandkids or finding the courage and strength to fight cancer, this campaign is about celebrating life’s moments both big and small.” The American Dairy Association Indiana has agreed to donate $100 per victory video or photo upload using the hashtag #WinnersDrinkMilk, up to $25,000, to support trauma and emergency patients at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. “On behalf of the American Dairy Association Indiana and our 1,100 Indiana dairy farm families who take great care to produce the milk that nourishes us, and Joe Kelsay, sixth-generation Indiana dairy farmer who will present the ceremonial milk bottle to this year’s Indianapolis 500 champion in Victory Circle, it’s our honor and privilege to care for, nurture and uphold the bottle of milk tradition at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” said Deb Osza, general manager, American Dairy Association Indiana. The Winners Drink Milk campaign runs from April 1 to April 30 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Contest information is available at revindy.org/winnersdrinkmilk. The 2017 Rev event will take place Saturday, May 6 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For more information, visit revindy.org.
