Pat McAfee
IMS Sends Congratulations to McAfee Following Retirement Announcement

Over the span of 8 years, perhaps no athlete has thrilled and entertained more Hoosier fans than Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee. Nicknamed “Boomstick”, for the leg strength in his punts, McAfee abruptly retired today, to pursue a career in comedy.

McAfee was a very public figure around Indianapolis, and his presence has been felt here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2013. Pat helped raise the flags outside of the old Gate 1 Wing and Wheel logo prior to the 2013 season, and was the pace car driver for the 2014 INDYCAR Grand Prix. In 2015, Pat kicked off the Month of May festivities in downtown Indianapolis on Monument Circle, then surprised Miller Lite Carb Day fans during the Tag Heuer Pit Stop Challenge, when he took over the t-shirt cannon, and began launching shirts into the crowd.

“Very few professional sports players have used their platform and audience to benefit others like Pat McAfee has through his time at the Indianapolis Colts.” says IMS President Doug Boles. “Pat is a great athlete and an all-pro punter that we will miss on the field, but what I love the most about Pat is what I know he will carry into this next phase of his career – his selfless approach to life, putting others ahead of himself and giving his time and his resources on a relentless mission to make his community and his country better every day.”

Most recently in 2016, McAfee launched ShirtsForAmerica.com, a website that sells t-shirts with a portion of the profits benefiting Wish For Our Heroes and the Pat McAfee Foundation. McAfee partnered with Dale Coyne Racing driver, Conor Daly, as his primary sponsor for the 100th Running of the Indy 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

Daly added, “It's been awesome to see Pat embrace the Indianapolis 500 over the years. He knows it's such a historic part of this city and the way he continues to get involved especially with me on a personal level really means a lot. I owe a lot to Pat for making sure our entry to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 was properly backed. That is something I will never forget. He had an incredible football career and I have no doubt the next chapter of the Pat McAfee show will be legendary."

Of course it wasn’t all business for McAfee in 2016 as he still made time to experience the 100th Running of the Indy 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil and enjoy some of the festivities.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway thanks Pat McAfee for all that he has done here at “The Greatest Race Course in the World,” and is welcomed back to the track at any time.
