For five weeks, the Indiana Bicentennial Torch has traveled throughout Indiana, promoting unity by connecting Hoosiers from all regions. The journey began in the state’s first capital, Corydon, and will end at the Indianapolis Statehouse. But before that last stop, the torch will appropriately visit one other Capital. On the morning of Saturday, Oct. 15, before heading to downtown Indianapolis, the Torch Relay will pass through the “Racing Capital of the World.” And it will do so in a distinctly IMS way – on a two-seat IndyCar driven by former IndyCar driver and team owner Sarah Fisher. Throughout the relay, torch bearers have employed modes of transportation that represent Indiana culture and heritage, so it’s only appropriate to take a lap around the famous oval that has held Indianapolis 500s for more than half the time the state has existed. And torches are no stranger to IMS – in January 2002, the Olympic Torch visited IMS on the way to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Sam Hornish Jr., the 2001 Indy Racing League champion, drove a 2002 Chevy Avalanche with the torch riding in the back. It was the first time the Olympic Torch had visited the facility. Fans are encouraged to come to IMS to see the Torch Relay on Saturday. Gate 2 will be open for entry at 8 a.m. and a torch lighting ceremony will begin at Victory Podium at 8:30 a.m.
