David Boudia, a four-time Olympic medalist and one of the world’s best 10-meter platform divers, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the inaugural Red Bull Air Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Oct. 1-2. Boudia, from Noblesville, Indiana, won silver and bronze medals in diving last month at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He won gold and bronze medals in 2012 in London. “I’m really excited to be the Grand Marshal for the first ever Red Bull Air Race at IMS,” Boudia said. “Planes taking off and landing at the Speedway will be a pretty awesome sight to see. Just like Olympic athletes, I know these pilots train hard and will be ready to put on a fast and competitive race for fans.” At the Red Bull Air Race, Boudia’s responsibilities will include delivering the very first “pilots to your planes” command in IMS history. He will also have the chance to take a ride with a Red Bull Air Race Challenger Cup pilot on Race Day. “Fans across the globe have gotten used to seeing David live up to the hype and perform well under extreme pressure,” IMS President Doug Boles said. “He’s been an outstanding representative for both Team USA and Indiana athletes for so many years. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our Hoosier Olympians than bringing David to IMS for this new and exciting event.” A Purdue University graduate who won six NCAA titles, Boudia began his diving career in 2000 at age 11 and actually overcame a fear of heights to pursue diving off the 10-meter platform. By 2005, he was a member of the U.S. National Diving Team and won a national title that year in synchronized diving. He qualified for his first Olympic team in 2008, competing in both the 10-meter platform and synchronized 10 meter platform. His book, “Greater than Gold: From Olympic Heartbreak to Ultimate Redemption,” was published in August ahead of the Rio games. At the Red Bull Air Race, the world’s finest pilots will navigate an aerial racetrack incorporating the IMS infield, oval and Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.
