Indianapolis civic leaders announced today from Georgia Street that a new event related to the 100th Running of the Indy 500 will bring the energy and passion of motorsports and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the heart of Indy’s Downtown on May 20, from 5 – 10:30 p.m. “Rock-IN-Roar 500” will be a free music festival and community celebration that officially “drops the green flag” on Race Week in Indianapolis. “Rock IN Roar 500” will take place on the West block of Georgia Street and on Pan Am Plaza in Downtown Indianapolis. All are invited to witness this event as 500 local musicians, led by John Mellencamp’s keyboardist Troye Kinnett and IndyCar driver Will Power, join together to perform One Republic’s “Love Runs Out” in a musical tribute to the spirit of the 100th Indy 500. Local and national acts will also perform throughout the night, with star radio personality Kristi Lee joining IndyCar driver Townsend Bell as hosts and emcees. Food trucks and beer and wine will be on-site to keep the party going late on this Friday before Indianapolis 500 qualifications. The marquee celebration in a month of Indy 500-themed Georgia Street activations, “Rock-IN-Roar 500” is an official 100th Running Host Committee event, with support from Downtown Indy, Inc. Troye Kinnett, keyboardist for John Mellencamp, will conduct 500 local singers, dancers and musicians of all ages in the night’s main event on Pan Am Plaza. Post-Fast Friday practice, IndyCar driver Will Power will be included in the group as a drummer. Other notable musicians performing with the group include drummer Dane Clark and bassist Jon E. Gee (both longtime John Mellencamp band members) and Grammy Award-winning keyboardist John Colby. The lead vocalist will be Phil Pierle of The Doo! Local favorites The Doo! and Living Proof will perform on the Georgia Street main stage, in addition to Pittsburgh-based national “electro-brass” act Beauty Slap. Star radio personality Kristi Lee and IndyCar driver Townsend Bell will host the night’s festivities. Emmy-award winning producer Terry Lingner will orchestrate and direct the “Roar 500” showcase at 7 p.m. on Pan Am Plaza. City leaders also announced the addition of a nightly activation of Georgia Street starting on May 20. “SPECTACLE: Sights & Sounds of the Indy 500 on Georgia Street” will be a free Indy 500-themed light and sound show featuring some of the most memorable radio calls from 100 years of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing mixed to a music bed of Andy Grammar’s hit song, ““It’s Good To Be Alive – Halleluia.” “SPECTACLE” will debut at “Rock IN Roar 500” and continue through Race Day, (Sunday, May 29) at 9 p.m., 9:20, 9:40, and 10 each night on all three blocks of Georgia Street. “We invite friends and neighbors throughout Central Indiana to come enjoy an evening in Downtown and stop by Georgia Street during that nine o’clock hour and fuel your motorsports passion,” said Sherry Seiwert, president of Downtown Indy, Inc.” “Rock IN Roar 500” and “SPECTACLE: Sights & Sounds of the Indy 500 on Georgia Street” are both products of the Community Celebrations Subcommittee of the 100th Running Host Committee.
