Monday Racing Roundup: Logano Wins in Kansas
Monday Racing Roundup: Logano Wins in Kansas

The calendar said it was Week 4 of the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup, yet all 12 title-eligible drivers already had an eye on Week 6.

The Contender round of the new four-round format includes three races and ends at Talladega, where a driver’s fate isn’t always in his own hands. The more secure path to the penultimate Eliminator round is to win before then – like Joey Logano did on Sunday at Kansas.

The driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford won for the second time in the Chase and sixth time overall this season, leading 122 of the final 145 laps and holding off rookie Kyle Larson by .479 of a second.

“This is nice to get this win and get us through to the next round and not have to worry about Talladega coming up. This was important,” Logano said. “We had to get two solid finishes with Kansas and Charlotte before Talladega, and this is as solid as it gets.”

He was a lot happier than his teammate. Brad Keselowski, the winner of the first race of the Chase’s opening Challenger round, blew a tire and crashed on Lap 159 of 267. He finished the race but could only muster a 36th-place finish.

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson had even worse days, finishing 39th and 40th. Earnhardt Jr. had a tire failure while Johnson, the defending Sprint Cup champion, was involved in a crash.

“I was going into Turn 3 and the surface of the tire unwound all the way across. The whole surface unwound like a string,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “But I’ve got to hand it to the guys. Man, that was a great race car. This is going to hurt us in the points, obviously, but we’ve got a lot of racing left and a lot of racing to win. We’re running good.”

The bottom four in the Chase standings are eliminated after Talladega, and the bottom four currently are Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., Keselowski and Kasey Kahne (22nd at Kansas). The Contender round continues this weekend at Charlotte.

NASCAR Nationwide Series: Kyle Busch wins at Kansas

Kansas Speedway isn’t high on Kyle Busch’s list of favorite tracks, but the 1.5-mile oval suited him well in two races over the weekend.

On Sunday, Busch finished third to take a big early step toward advancing in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, while on Saturday he won in the Nationwide Series.

Busch drove his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Toyota down to the apron to pass Kevin Harvick with 21 laps to go and held on for his series-leading sixth win of the season and record-extending 69th overall. He won by .767 of a second over Harvick, while Ryan Blaney finished third.

“I was trying to get (Harvick) as quick as I could, but aero here at this place – you’re running almost wide open so I was just trying to figure out what I could do with my throttle and time my run. It finally worked out pretty good there down the front stretch,” Busch said.

Points leader Chase Elliott finished 10th, adding to his lead with Regan Smith finishing 22nd. Smith is 38 points back while Ty Dillon, a winner at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, is just two points behind Smith after finishing fifth at Kansas.

MotoGP: Marquez has chance to clinch at Motegi

Marc Marquez’ second consecutive MotoGP World Championship has been all but a foregone conclusion for weeks, given how the Spaniard won 11 of the season’s first 12 races including the Red Bull Indianapolis GP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

This weekend in Japan, he can make it official.

The Repsol Honda rider can clinch with a win at Twin Ring Motegi or via a number of other scenarios. Marquez leads the championship by 75 points over teammate Dani Pedrosa and 78 points over Valentino Rossi.

The title has been clinched twice before at Motegi, by Casey Stoner in 2007 and Rossi in 2008. Marquez could become the first Honda rider to win the title in the manufacturer’s home territory.
