Dillon Prepares For Second Brickyard 400 Start

A two-time NASCAR champion in the middle of his first season as a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver, Austin Dillon is looking to boost his career with a win in the Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com on Sunday, July 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Everybody knows how prestigious this race is and just being a part of it was huge last year, and then this year coming back I’m excited to have a good run,” Dillon said. “I feel like we’ve got a little momentum going into this race. We’ve been running a little better as of late on the ovals, so I’m definitely looking forward to Indy.

No stranger to the famed IMS 2.5-mile oval, Dillon finished fifth in the inaugural Indiana 250 Nationwide Series race in 2012 and 12th last season. Dillon, who drives the No. 3 Mycogen Seeds Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, is looking to improve on his 26th place finish last year in his Sprint Cup debut at IMS, and he believes his previous experience will help with that effort.

“Hopefully it will cut the learning curve in half and we can rely on some of our notes and what we’ve done in the past to make our car better, so hopefully that plays out for us,” Dillon said.

The 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series winner and the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, Dillon, 24, hopes those successes will help place him on the fast track to a Sprint Cup Series crown.

“It’s been a solid year and having those championships to lean back on has definitely helped,” Dillon said. “Anytime you can look back on past races and you’re successful, when you’ve had a bad day, it’s nice. Those are good things to have back there with two championships.

“This year in Cup, it’s been fun. I’ve learned a lot of different things going forward to make our cars better and to race around guys. I’ve learned a lot and can’t wait to get to these places (NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tracks) for a second and third time.”

Dillon, who is currently 18th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, started his rookie campaign in a big way by winning the pole position at the 2014 Daytona 500.

“Daytona feels like it was forever ago, and it was surprising,” Dillon said. “You always dream about doing things like that in the Cup Series, sitting on poles and going fast, and we were able to set it off right there at the beginning of the year at Daytona. Our guys did a great job building a fast car to earn a solid top-ten run for us, and I can’t wait to get back there.”

Dillon was in Indianapolis on a media tour on Wednesday appearing at Eagle Creek Park’s Go Ape obstacle course facility and at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, home of the Indianapolis Colts, where he met with players Pat McAfee and Matt Overton.

“It was a blast,” Dillon said. “Zip lining at Eagle Creek and hanging out with Pat and Matt was a lot of fun. They should have their own TV show, they are wide open and it’s fun to listen to them, and getting to hang out at the Colts facility today was really awesome.”

The July 24-27 Kroger Super Weekend will consist of TUDOR United SportsCar Championship practice and qualifying on Thursday, July 24, with NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series practice and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship racing on Friday, July 25. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice and qualifying, along with the third annual Indiana 250 Nationwide Series race, will be held on Saturday, July 26, with the 21st Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com race on Sunday, July 27.
