Nine Drivers, Four Laps for Verizon P1 Award
Nine Drivers, Four Laps for Verizon P1 Award

After more than 8,400 laps of practice over seven sessions and one round of qualifications on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, nine Verizon IndyCar Series drivers have one shot at the pole for the 98th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

Little separated the fastest qualifier -- Ed Carpenter (230.661 mph) -- and Ryan Hunter-Reay (230.011) in ninth in Round 1. Five different teams are represented in the Fast Nine Shootout.

"I think we have a good chance for the pole but the field is very tight this year," said Carpenter, who earned the 2013 Verizon P1 Award with a four-lap average of 228.762 mph in the No. 20 Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka car. "It will come down on who gets it right on the day for the pole. It really comes down to being perfect for four laps."

ABC will televise qualifications May 18 (1-3 p.m.), with www.watchespn.com providing additional coverage around the TV windows. The IMS Radio Network broadcast both days can be heard on network affiliates, XM 209 and Sirius 213, on www.indycar.com in conjunction with Timing & Scoring and the INDYCAR 13 app.

"That was the most nerve-racking qualifying I've ever been a part of. I hope the fans enjoyed it," said Simon Pagenaud, who qualified seventh at 230.070 in the No. 77 Schmidt Peterson Hamilton Motorsports car.

Qualifiers 10-33 also are required to make another four-lap run May 18 to determine their position in the 200-lap race.
