Five riders to watch in various classes at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on Aug. 16-18 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Marc Marquez (MotoGP): Marquez enters the Red Bull Indianapolis GP as the championship leader in the elite MotoGP category in his first season in the class. He leads Repsol Honda teammate and two-time Red Bull Indianapolis GP winner Dani Pedrosa by 16 points in the standings. Spaniard Marquez, 20, became the youngest premier-class winner in the 64-year history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing earlier this season and has won two consecutive races on his Repsol Honda entering Indianapolis. Marquez, from Spain, will attempt to sweep the three American rounds. He won the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas at Austin, Texas, and the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Monterey, Calif., earlier this season. He has enjoyed success at Indianapolis, winning the Moto2 race in 2011 and 2012 at IMS. He has energized the premier class of the World Championship with his aggressive, unique riding style in which he often drags his knees and elbows on the asphalt in corners. Marquez is trying to become the first rookie to win the premier-class world title since American Kenny Roberts in 1978. Ben Spies (MotoGP): American star Spies will return to action this weekend at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP after missing six of the last seven races this season due to lingering problems from major shoulder surgery after a season-ending crash in October 2013. Spies, from Longview, Texas, will look to put his season back on track on the Ignite Pramac Ducati. He has enjoyed success at Indianapolis, winning the pole in 2010 and finishing second in 2010 and third in 2011. Spies is one of three Americans in the premier MotoGP class, joining 2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards. Cal Crutchlow (MotoGP): No rider has achieved more with less this season than Crutchlow. British rider Crutchlow is fourth in the MotoGP point standings with four podium finishes this season. He has achieved this despite riding on a Tech 3 Yamaha satellite bike that doesn’t have all of the upgraded parts of factory machines, yet Crutchlow is ahead of six riders on factory bikes in the standings, including Yamaha superstar Valentino Rossi. That success helped Crutchlow land a lucrative deal with the factory Ducati Team starting in 2014. Crutchlow could make history if he earns his first career victory at Indianapolis. He would be the first British rider to win a premier class race in the World Championship since the legendary Barry Sheene’s last victory in 1981. Scott Redding (Moto2): Redding, from Great Britain, leads the intermediate Moto2 class by 23 points over Pol Espargaro entering Indianapolis. Redding has won twice this season on his Marc VDS Kalex-Honda. He succeeds on the smaller, 600cc bikes despite being one of the largest riders inGrand Prix motorcycle racing, at 6-foot, 163 pounds. This will be Redding’s final Red Bull Indianapolis GP in the Moto2 class, as he is climbing to the premier MotoGP class next season, joining Moto2 title rival Espargaro. Shelina Moreda (AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series, FIM eRoadRacing World Cup): Moreda is the only rider competing in more than one class this weekend in the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, as she is racing in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series and the FIM eRoadRacing World Cup. The two bikes could not be more different. Moreda’s Harley-Davidson XR1200 is powered by a gasoline engine that emits a loud rumble, while her Brammo Empulse TTX is powered by electric batteries and emits a unique whirring sound. Moreda, from Petaluma, Calif., raced in the Harley-Davidson series in 2011 at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP.
