Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford helped to present a special award in his name for permanent display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum on Dec. 5. The Lone Star Johnny Rutherford Award was created last year by IndyCar Ministry to honor the INDYCAR participant who best exemplifies outstanding character, integrity, service and leadership in the home, at the track and in the community. The award will be presented for the first time on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Indianapolis 500 Breakfast benefiting IndyCar Ministry. Tickets are available at www.indy500breakfast.com. “It’s a great honor,” Rutherford said. “As a driver, wanting to come here and race when I was younger and then finally achieving that, and now to have my peers create an award in my name I think is really great, and I’m really pleased.” INDYCAR teams will submit nominations for the award, and everyone with an INDYCAR season credential can vote for their choice for the honor. After the vote is tabulated, Rutherford will make the final decision about the award recipient. Founded in 1996, IndyCar Ministry is a not-for-profit 501c3 non-denominational Christian organization dedicated to providing spiritual support and counseling to the IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights, Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship, teams, safety crew and officials.
