In the first two sessions of the seventh round of the 2016 Red Bull Air Race World Championship Matthias Dolderer and Nicolas Ivanoff dominated as they topped the timesheets in Friday's Free Practice sessions. Current standings leader Dolderer was fastest out of the blocks in the morning session, posting a time of 1 minute, 4.247 seconds, but was unable to recreate that time in Free Practice 2 when he finished in sixth more than two seconds behind the front runner. French pilot Nicolas Ivanoff was the quickest today when he passed the Finish Gate in just 1:03.672 in the second session. He has always had a love for the speedway circuits and won at Texas Motor Speedway in 2014 – the first speedway track in 2014 when the Red Bull Air Race returned to the skies. There were plenty of penalties in today's sessions as the pilots got their first feel of the Indianapolis track. The championship race was clear for all to see in the session with Dolderer finishing top of the timesheet and Hall was right on his tail, just 0.199 seconds behind. Canadian Pete McLeod, who always prefers the tighter, twisty tracks, finished third on the timesheet in Free Practice 1 and after his podium finish in Lausitz, Germany, he has shown good form once again. Despite picking up three seconds in penalties, Martin Sonka was fourth on the timesheet in Free Practice 1 with fellow countryman Petr Kopfstein close behind in fifth. New Master Class pilot Cristian Bolton had his first taste of the elite class and put in a time of 1:08.915, which saw him in 12th and in Free Practice 2 he managed to improve and finished in ninth. In Free Practice 2, Sonka was closest to Ivanoff's time, stopping the clock just 0.166 seconds slower than the Frenchman. Home race hero Kirby Chambliss finished third in the afternoon. Dolderer's Championship rival, Matt Hall didn't partake in Free Practice 2 due to not feeling well, but has confirmed he will fly in tomorrow's qualifying session. Saturday’s qualifying will begin at 3:05 p.m. for the Challenger class, with the Master Class to follow.
