Banks Collection Among Treasures At IMS Memorabilia Show
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s “Legends Day Honoring Roger Penske” will offer a host of activities Indianapolis 500 fans will savor. The event – which takes place Saturday, May 26, the day before the Indianapolis 500 – includes many entertaining elements beyond the traditional drivers’ meeting and full-field autograph session.
Among them is Roger Penske’s autograph session as well as the return of dozens of retired race veterans, track and display time for vintage Indy 500 race cars and a top-caliber memorabilia show.
The Legends Day memorabilia show – which takes place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 26 in the Pagoda Pavilion at IMS -- will present an array of outstanding collections, some worthy of museum exhibitions.
Among the finest will come from the estate of Henry Banks. He was the 1950 National Champion, six-time Indianapolis 500 veteran and for 25 years USAC director and president. Banks’ wife, Rosie, meticulously cared for her husband’s memorabilia starting with his early years (1930s) in big cars and midgets until his retirement from USAC in the 80s. The collection includes nearly 700 pieces. Banks passed away in 1994, and his wife died in 2003. The collection has been in storage since that time.
"The Banks’ family collection is the largest, most complete and well-kept assortment of historic auto racing memorabilia I have had the privilege to review in my nearly 50 years of collecting," said Ted Knorr, one of the memorabilia show’s producers.
All 95 display booths for the show have been sold out. Collectors and exhibitors from across America, as well as Canada, South America, Australia and Europe, will display.
