The world’s greatest race fans can start revving their engines for another spring and summer of exciting racing action in 2016 at the Racing Capital of the World, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Tuesday’s announcement of the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule completed the 2016 IMS racing calendar that will begin with the stars of the Verizon IndyCar Series competing in the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the IMS road course on Saturday, May 14. Indy 500 qualifications will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and May 22, followed by the history-making 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on Sunday, May 29. “The release of (the) Verizon IndyCar Series schedule marks a significant milestone in the countdown to a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of speed, progress and the pursuit of glory,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “The 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race will be a sensational and singular experience that simply cannot be matched anywhere else on the globe. Everyone at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway looks forward to celebrating another century of monumental moments and even more epic stories as the future unfolds.” The 2016 IMS racing schedule will include the Crown Royal presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard on Sunday, July 24, featuring the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The Crown Royal presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard is the 20th of 36 points races on the 2016 Sprint Cup Series schedule, released Monday by NASCAR. In addition to the 23rd annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, IMS will host the fifth annual Lilly Diabetes 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday, July 23. “All of us at IMS are thrilled to once again host the NASCAR XFINITY Series Lilly Diabetes 250 and the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series during the 23rd annual Crown Royal presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard,” Boles said. “Earlier this year Kyle Busch forever stamped his name in IMS history in becoming the first driver to win both of our classic NASCAR races during the same weekend, and this upcoming season we will cheer on Hoosier native Tony Stewart as he looks for his third career Brickyard 400 victory in his 18th and final start at one of the world’s premier racing events.” Stewart is expected to compete against many of NASCAR’s best drivers including four-time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson and past winners Ryan Newman, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard. Also expected in the field will be fan favorites Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick. In addition, the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) will once again bring its Brickyard Invitational to IMS for the third consecutive year June 15-19, which includes Father’s Day weekend. The event is headlined by the popular Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am pairing veteran Indianapolis 500 drivers with amateur racing partners for a 45-minute sportscar race on the IMS road course.
