Did you know that 6 percent of Indiana seniors are at risk for hunger? And that Indiana ranks 12th in the nation in senior food insecurity? The CICOA Meals & More program works to combat that, providing 2,000 meals every weekday in clients’ homes and at 27 Central Indiana meal sites. And on Wednesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, CICOA served its 18 millionth meal to a senior guest, Jim Duncan of Indianapolis. Duncan, 70, has lunch daily with CICOA’s Meals & More program at Bethany Village, an American Senior Communities apartment complex. “The food is great, but the friendship is what I value the most, being able to eat with other people and relate to folks who are in the same situation I am,” said Duncan, who also noted that he’s a fan of the Indianapolis 500. Verizon IndyCar Series driver Ed Carpenter was on hand in the Gasoline Alley along with 200 senior guests for lunch, as was CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions President and CEO Orion Bell. Douglas Hairston, the director of the Mayor’s Office Front Porch Alliance, also was on hand along with 500 Festival Princesses Corey Windler and Miche Smith. Tim Paul, president of Comfort Keepers, presented the 18 millionth meal to Duncan, marking an impressive milestone and helping further raise awareness about senior hunger in Indiana.
