Jimmie Johnson
Monday Racing Roundup: Johnson Wins at Texas

The stage is set for a free-for-all at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday – on-track, that is.

But don’t be surprised if there’s more.

Jimmie Johnson won the second race of the Eliminator round of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup on Sunday at Texas, the second win of the round by a title-ineligible driver, but the big story was Brad Keselowski’s third-place run and how he got there.

On the first of two green-white-checker attempts, Keselowski nosed his No. 2 Penske Racing Ford in between Jeff Gordon (restarting first from the outside lane) and Johnson, brushing Gordon in the process and cutting his left-rear tire. Gordon spun out moments later, doomed to a 29th-place finish instead of a potential win, and after the race confronted Keselowski on pit road and sparked a bloody brawl.

“We drove down into Turn 1 and he just decided to body-slam us,” said Gordon, who fell from first to fourth in the Chase standings. “It ruined our chances, ruined our night, might have even ruined our Chase hopes. It’s just uncalled for. I had to show my displeasure.”

Keselowski, who got a little nudge into the brawl from runner-up Kevin Harvick (“if you're going to race like that, you're going to have to man up at some point,” Harvick said), was unapologetic after his second post-race incident in four weeks.

“I’m doing everything I can to win this championship. That’s not something I’m going to be ashamed for,” the 2012 Sprint Cup champion said. “If I was out there wrecking guys to do it, that would be one thing. But I think a little bit of rubbing was probably how this sport was created. I don’t mind getting raced that way. I don’t mind racing that way.”

But Keselowski is still on outside of the cutoff for the Chase finale at Homestead. Four drivers advance and at least three will do so on points as Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (at Martinsville) claimed the first two Eliminator races as title-ineligible drivers.

Joey Logano, Keselowski’s teammate, is tied atop the Chase standings with Denny Hamlin. Ryan Newman is two points back in third, while Gordon is 12 back in fourth. Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Keselowski and Harvick hold the bottom four spots in points but only six points separate Gordon from eighth-place Harvick.

And winning at Phoenix is still worth an automatic spot in the finale for any of the eight.

NASCAR Nationwide Series: Kyle Busch wins at Texas

Kyle Busch continued his remarkable part-time Nationwide Series season on Saturday at Texas, leading 116 of 200 laps to win for the seventh time.

Busch won by 1.561 seconds over Joey Logano for his 70th win overall in the series. It was also the 100th Nationwide win for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Rookie Chase Elliott finished fourth, taking one more step toward the championship. Elliott, who hasn’t finished outside the top 10 since a 12th at the Lilly Diabetes 250 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, increased his lead to 48 points over Regan Smith (11th at Texas) with two races remaining.

MotoGP: Finale this weekend in Spain

A year ago, Marc Marquez arrived at the MotoGP finale at Valencia, Spain, looking to become the youngest champion in premier-class history.

This year he took care of business much earlier.

Marquez, 21, clinched his second consecutive world title last month in Japan, allowing the Spaniard to finish the season at home without pressure. But he will have a chance at one more record if he can win for the 13th time in 18 races this season.

With his 12th win of the year at Malaysia on Oct. 26, the Repsol Honda rider equaled Australia’s Mick Doohan for the most wins in the top class in a single season. A win in the finale would give Marquez solo possession of the mark.

While the championship is no longer in doubt, second place still is. Italy’s Valentino Rossi has a 12-point lead over his Movistar Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo of Spain.

Spanish riders have won the last 10 MotoGP races in Spain.
