Indiana Broadcasting Hall To Induct IMS Historian Davidson
Indiana Broadcasting Hall To Induct IMS Historian Davidson

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Historian Donald Davidson will be one of five inductees in 2013 into the Richard M. Fairbanks Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.

Induction ceremonies will take place during a dinner Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Indianapolis Marriott North Hotel.

Other inductees are “Big Jim” Wilson, who served a full decade as sports director for WISH-TV Channel 8; Bob Carter, better known as WTTV Channel 4’s late-night ghoulish movie host, “Sammy Terry;” and broadcast executives Lloyd Wright, president and CEO of WFYI Public Media, and Vicki Weger, producer of “The PBS NewsHour” with Jim Lehrer, along with similar assignments with NBC and ABC.

“I’m very flattered to be included in such esteemed company,” Davidson said. “This is a wonderful honor I appreciate very much, especially since so many of my mentors have been enshrined in this Hall of Fame, including the late Sid Collins.”

Davidson has been a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network team since being hired by Sid Collins in 1965. Since 1971, Davidson has been heard throughout the month of May on WIBC 1070 AM (now WFNI The Fan) with qualification coverage and the nightly “Talk of Gasoline Alley” call-in program.

His other broadcast credits include regular participation on WIBC’s Sunday morning program “The First Day” (1976-84), WTTV Channel 4’s qualification coverage with Gary Lee (1984-89); WNDY Channel 23’s daily three-hour “block” from the track during May with Gary Lee (1995) and Vince Welch (1996-97) and “Looking Back with Davidson,” a weekly nostalgic music program which aired on the local NPR affiliate, WIAN-FM, for much of 1973.

The Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame was established in 1981 and is featured in an exhibit at the Indiana State Museum.
